Acute Depression

Acute depression is also known as major depressive disorder, unipolar depression or clinical depression. It is one of the mental disorder which is treatable. Acute depression is mainly characterized by lose of interest, low mood and emotional stress. Acute depression greatly affects person’s life and shows many harmful effects arise from it. Acute depression is diagnosed by mental exams, self behavior explanation and depending upon statements of surrounded people.

Causes of Acute Depression

Root cause of acute depression is still unknown but following are causes which may also responsible for acute depression.

  • Emotional changes
  • Biological changes
  • Environmental changes
  • Stress
  • Loss of loved ones
  • Physical disability
  • Stressful conditions

Symptoms of Acute Depression

  1. Patient of acute depression doesn't show any interest in activities which are enjoyable to others.
  2. They remain continuously sad and nervous.
  3. Most of the patients have sleeping problem.
  4. Guiltiness and insignificance feelings occur constantly in individual having acute depression.
  5. Loss of interest in sexual intercourse
  6. Suicidal feelings or suicidal try also happen in most of the cases.
  7. Headache and pain in the stomach region
  8. Restiveness, tiredness or aloneness is mainly observed in acute depression pressure.
  9. Concentration problem is also one of the major symptoms of acute depression.
  10. Because of poor appetite patient may gain weight or lose it

How Acute Depression is treated?

  • Medicines - Common method to treat acute depression is use of antidepressants. Tricyclic antidepressants, escitalopram, fluoxetine or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are mainly used in the treatment of acute depression but it should be prescribe by doctors.
  • Therapy - Cognitive behavioral therapy, talk therapy and interpersonal therapies are preferred to treat acute depression.
  • Electroconvulsive therapy - It is used when antidepressants fails to treat acute depression. It is largely used in all types of depression where electric current is passed to the brain.
  • Exercise - Regular exercise increases freshness of mind and blood circulation. Regular exercise may reduce some sort of depression.
