What is Agitated Depression?
Agitated depression also called as dysphoric mania or mixed state. Agitated depression is dangerous type of depression in which patient may feel nervousness, restlessness, angry and agitated. It mainly affects in middle and elder age. Agitated depression is divided into three categories that are Psychotic agitated depression, Non-psychotic agitated depression and Excited agitated depression. There is high risk of suicide involved in agitated depression and it is some what similar to male depression.
Causes of Agitated Depression
Various situations are responsible for causing agitation depression. Sudden unlike changes in life, economic problem, problem in close relationship or chronic sickness are mainly responsible for causing agitated depression.
Sign and symptoms of Agitated Depression
- Cutting of fabrics
- Heaving or rubbing on hair and skin
- Motor agitation
- Intense inner tension
- Racing feelings
- Continuous moving
- Constant talking
- Verbal outburst
- Hand wringing
- Difficulty in explaining problem
Diagnosis of Agitated Depression
Diagnosis of agitated depression is difficult. Agitated depression is characterized by anger, irritability and disturbance. Conditions which differentiate agitated depression from other types of depression are used in diagnosis. Racing feelings, major depressive incident, either motor agitation or psychic agitation are helpful in diagnosing agitated depression.
Treatment for Agitated Depression
- Medicines - Antidepressants and anticonvulsant like divalproex, aripiprazole, clozapine or olanzapine is largely used in treatment of agitated depression.
- Psychotherapy - In most of the cases psychotherapy is preferred to treat agitated depression.
- Combination of medicines and psychotherapy - When drug therapy and psychotherapy is used in combination then effect is much better for curing agitated depression.
- Electroconvulsive therapy - Electricity is passed to the brain through electrodes to overcome from agitated depression.
