Beck Depression

Beck depression inventory (BDI) is used to determine severity and intensity of depression. BDI is created by Dr. Aaron T. Beck hence name is given beck depression inventory. It contains 21 questions along with multiple options. BDI is used to diagnosis depression in Adolescents and adults. BDI take only five minutes for completing test and for results.

Working of Beck Depression Inventory

  • Beck depression inventory is used to detect or observe changes during depression. BDI has two versions and second version is known as BDI-II.
  • Long form of BDI consists of 21 questions along with four answers. Score is measure on 0-3 scale and depending upon total score severity of depression is measure.
  • Each question is depend on different depression symptoms such as hopelessness, feelings of guilt, sleep disturbance, appetite changes etc.
  • Primary health care workers mainly use short form of BDI. Short form of BDI is consisting of only seven questions.

Beck Depression Inventory Questions

Below are examples of question which are part of Beck Depression Inventory are given

0 - I do not have feeling of failure.
1 - I thought I failed more than the average person.
2 - When I look back I feel lot of failure in my past life.
3 - As a person I completely failed in my life.

0 - Not suicidal feelings at all.
1 - Sometimes I thoughts suicide, but I would not carry them out.
2 - I would like to kill myself.
3 - When I get chances I would kill myself.

Interpretation for Beck Depression Inventory

  1. If you score greater than 15 then depression is considered as mild depression.
  2. If score is between 15-30 then it is considered as moderate depression.
  3. If score is above 30 it is considered severe depression.

Limitation of Beck Depression Inventory

The use of physical symptoms to assess the severity of depression is not correct because symptoms of other disesases are same as that of depression which may misguide us. Scores can be maximized or minimized without any difficulty by the person who is completing it.
