Depression Related to Heart Disease

Depression and heart disease is interrelated with each other in such way that if patient is suffering from any heart disease then it should be diagnosis for depression also. Depression mostly occurs after heart attack or having other heart disease. Chances of depression are usually three times greater in patient after heart attack than normal person.

Role of depression in Heart Diseases

  1. If depression remains untreated or ignored in cardiac patients then chances of high blood pressure, weakened immune system and arterial damage may be increases.
  2. If patient is having heart disease then chances of depression is at high risk and if normal patient have depression then this depression may lead to heart attacks or other heart problems.
  3. Patient may readmitted to hospital within 3-12 months if he/she suffers from both heart problem and depression.

Symptoms of Depression in Heart Disease Patient

  • Suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Nervousness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in social activity
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Concentration problem
  • Changes in appetite

How to Handle Depression in Heart Disease Patient?

  • Antidepressants drugs like Zoloft and Celexa are preferably used treat depression. Psychotherapy along with antidepressant work best for treating depression.
  • In psychotherapy cognitive behavior therapy and talk therapy is applied to decrease depression in cardiac patients.
  • Exercise, healthy diet, relaxation and stress management methods are helpful to handle depression.
  • Pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic studies are carried out for patient after heart attack for further treatment.

Tips for Depressed patient having Heart Disease

  1. Attend cardiac rehabilitation program and perform exercise regularly which is suggested by doctor.
  2. Join to support group so that you can discuss your feelings, problems with other person who is already gone through these stages.
  3. Avoid drinking and smoking because these things increase chances of heart attacks and depression.
  4. Walk daily and get sufficient sleep at night.
