Depression During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is considered as happiest time of women’s life but it not happened for all women’s as around 20% women suffered from depression during pregnancy. If depression during pregnancy remains untreated then it become harmful for both mother and baby. Depressed pregnant women may be at the risk of having premature delivery. Pregnancy depression is less common as compared to postpartum depression which occurs after child birth.
Reasons for Depression During Pregnancy
- During pregnancy chemical balance of the brain changes and because of these chemicals which controls mood also changes in their proportion resulting in depression.
- Various hormonal changes also occur during pregnancy which also changes your mood and causes depression.
- Different emotional factors, stress, economical problem or relationship problem during pregnancy also give rise to depression.
- Depression might arise because of previous miscarriage, pregnancy loss, fertility problem or unexpected pregnancy.
Symptoms of Depression During Pregnancy
- Loneliness or hopelessness
- Loss of interest
- Sleeping problem
- Trouble in concentration
- Wish for excessive eating or not want eating at all
- Irritability and tearful feeling
- Anxiety or low mood
- Thoughts of suicide
Treatment for Depression During Pregnancy
- Drugs - Medicines like antidepressants are used to treat depression during pregnancy but it should be prescribe by doctor.
- Psychotherapy - It is widely used because it does not give any side effect on mother as well as on baby.
- Support groups - Join support group so that you can share your problems with person who is already going through this disorder.
- Diet - Eat properly even you don’t wish it and avoid drinking of alcohol.
- Exercise - Regular exercise and yoga maintain freshness and energy so that tiredness or weakness may avoid.
- Discussion - Discuss your problem or symptoms with family members or friends. So that they help you to come out from depression. This method also reduces your symptom of loneliness.
