Allopurinol Drug - Information, Side effects and uses of Allopurinol Medicine

Type of drug: Gout treatment

Uses:

Used as a preventative measure for people who suffer from gout. It is not usually prescribed to treat sudden flare-ups of the condition.

How it works:

It inhibits the production of an enzyme which is crucial to the formation of crystals - made from uric acid - in the joints of the body which characterises the disease. It can also be used to reduce high uric acid levels which occur as side effects of some anti-cancer treatments.

Possible adverse effects:

Adverse effects are uncommon, but there may be nausea and itching. Rarely causes drowsiness, headache, fever, a metallic taste in the mouth and fever and chills.

Other information:

Will often be given in conjunction with an anti-inflammatory drug, as in some cases it may increase the severity of acute attacks of the disease. Regular blood checks will be made to assess the levels of uric acid. It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication.

Drug Interactions

Children: This drug is either not recommended for children, or is recommended only for children above a certain age.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: This drug is either not recommended for use by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or the precise effects are not known and it should therefore only be used with caution and under medical advice.

Alcohol: Alcohol should not be consumed, or only with caution – after medical advice has been sought - while you are taking this drug.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed amount as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next amount, jump the amount which you missed and only taken your next regularly programmed amount. Do not take a double dose of this drug.

Storage of Allopurinol

As with any medicine, keep Allopurinol medicine out of the reach of children and discard any unused medicine when it is outdated or no longer needed. Allopurinol should be stored away from heat and direct light in an area free from moisture - do not store in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or any other place that might be susceptible to dampness or extreme heat.
