Cyclen Ortho Lo Tri Medicine - Information, Side effects and uses of Cyclen

Cyclen medicine contains norgestimate and ethinyl estradiol as active ingredients. It is an oral contraceptive prescribed to prevent pregnancy and/or to regulate menstrual periods.

The drug works by altering the mucus at the cervix entrance to prevent the entry of sperm. It also alters the uterus lining to resist implantation of the fertilized egg. Oral contraceptives create the same chemical atmosphere in blood that exists during pregnancy.

Before using Cyclen medicine

Before you use this medicine check with your doctor, or pharmacist:

- if you ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to estrogens or progestogen;

- if you are pregnant or want to become pregnant within three months;

- if you are breast-feeding an infant;

- if you have any of the following medical problems:

  • Diabetes
  • Ailments of the breast
  • Disorders of the uterus
  • Migraine or epilepsy
  • High blood pressure
  • Asthma or heart conditions
  • Kidney disease
  • Gallstones

Treatment

This medication is used to prevent preg nancy or to regulate menstrual periods.

Adverse reactions of Cyclen

Along with the needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects or adverse reactions.

  • An increased risk of the following adverse reactions has been associated with the use of oral contraceptives:
    1. Thrombophlebitis
    2. Venous thrombosis
    3. Arterial thromboembolism
    4. Pulmonary (lung) embolism
    5. Myocardial infarction
    6. Cerebral hemorrhage
    7. Cerebral thrombosis
    8. Hypertension
    9. Gallbladder disease
    10. Hepatic (liver) hepatomas
    11. Benign liver tumors
  • The following adverse reactions have been reported in patients receiving oral contraceptives and are believed to be drug-related:
    1. Nausea and vomiting
    2. Abdominal cramps
    3. Breakthrough bleeding
    4. Spotting
    5. Change in menstrual flow
    6. Amenorrhea
    7. Temporary infertility
    8. Edema
    9. Breast changes
    10. Weight changes
    11. Cholestatic jaundice
    12. Migraine
    13. Rash (allergic)
    14. Mental depression
    15. Vaginal candidiasis

Interactions of cyclen

This medicine may interact with several other drugs such as antibiotics, anticoagulants, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, oral antidiabetics, antihistamines, barbiturates, oral hypoglycemics, insulin, meperidine.

  • Be sure to tell your doctor about any medications you are currently taking.

Storage of cyclen

Tablets should be stored at room temperature; store away from heat and direct light. Keep out of reach of children, since this medicine may be dangerous in children.
