Cervical polyps, also called endocervical polyps, are a growth of tissue in the cervix. The cervix is the neck of the uterus which opens into the vagina. Women of any age may have cervical polyps. Polyps are very rarely cancer, and they seldom develop into cancer of the cervix. However, we can be sure that a polyp is a benign polyp only by removing it and looking at the tissue in the lab.

Symptoms and signs of Cervical polyps

Cervical polyps may not cause any symptoms. However, you may experience:

• Discharge, which can be foul-smelling if there is an infection
• Bleeding between periods
• Heavier bleeding during periods
• Bleeding after intercourse

Sometimes, cervical polyps can cause problems with fertility.

Cuase of Cervical polyps

The cause of cervical polyps is not fully understood, but it usuallly resuts from infections. It can be associated with; Chronic inflammation, increase estrogen levels that the body does not respond well with, or local congestion of cervical blood vessles. Cervcal polyps is very common in the ages of 20 and over who had children. it is fairly common to find one single polyp and in some cases 2 more are found.

Cervical polyps is a projectile growth originating from the mucosal surface of the cervix, or even the endocervical cannall. It is a small growth that hang from a stalk and sticks out (protrude) through the internal or exterior os (or cervical opening)

Diagnosis of Cervical polyps

Cervical polyps can be detected through pelvic exams. Sometimes the doctor may remove the growth for laboratory testing.

What is the treatment of Cervical polyps?

Cervical polyps are treated by removing them, as described above. Polyps or the removal of polyps will not make it difficult for you to get pregnant.

After treatment for cervical polyps, you should continue to have a pelvic exam every year for the rest of your life. Then, if you develop another polyp, your health care provider can take care of it. Tell your health care provider if you have bleeding after intercourse.
