Gonorrhoea - Picture, Signs, Symptoms, Causes, Herbal Cure and Treatment of gonorrhea
Gonorrhoea is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. It affects the cells in the genital mucous membranes, and can spread in the bloodstream to other parts of the body.
One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases, gonorrhoea is caused by a bacteria. It can affect the vagina, urethra (tube to the bladder), rectum, throat or eyes.
Anyone who suspects that they may have a sexually transmitted disease should either see their doctor or visit a genito-urinary clinic. Swabs (using cotton buds or similiar) will be taken from the vagina or penis. Gonorrhoea is sometimes not transmitted as the only infection and the doctor will ask if you would like to be checked for other sexually transmitted diseases at the same time. The others to be considered are hepatitis A, Band C, syphilis, thrush and HIV.
A woman who has gonorrhoea when she delivers her baby may, inadvertently, spread the disease to the baby's eyes. Any eye infection in babies before the age of six weeks should be checked (using a swab) for gonorrhoea.
Symptoms of gonorrhoea
There may be none at all, but women may notice:
- Vaginal discharge, which may be just more in volume, thin or green
- Painon urination
- Sore throat
Men may notice:
- Yellowish discharge from thepenis
- Painon urination
- Anal itching
- Sore throat
Treatment for gonorrhoea
Usually all that is required is a course of antibiotics to cure the disease. If the illness is left untreated because there are no signs or because people are too frightened to see a doctor, then it may lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and sterility in women. In men, the infection can spread to the testicles and prostate, causing pain, difficulty in passing urine and possible infertility. It is therefore essential to visit your doctor if you have any worries about your sexual health.
