How to Keep Snacks Fresh?
For understanding the importance of fresh foods, lets understend the definition of fresh food. Fresh food means food which is recently made, produced, harvested, not canned or preserved and not frozen.
Common tips for keeping food and snacks fresh
- Take clothespin, fold the bag inward from each side, one flap down and then clip.
- Don't refrigerate Apples, Banana's, Pears, Oranges, Potato's and onions.
- Don't buy cut items.
- Wash fruits before eating.
- Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened.
- Inspect canned foods and discard any food in damaged cans. Can damage is shown by swelling, leakage, punctures, holes, fractures, extensive deep rusting, or crushing/denting severe enough to prevent normal stacking or opening with a manual, wheel-type can opener.
- Put a slice of toast on top of cooked rice to keep it fresh in the fridge.
- For really fresh tomatoes store them in a basket on your work surface, chilling them even in the fridge can harm the flavour. They don't keep as long, however, away from the fridge.
- Stop potatoes sprouting and turning green by buying them in a sack, rather than a plastic bag and keep them in a cool place with no light
Getting ever fresh snacks at home
- If you've had baking powder a while, and want to test its usability, put half a teaspoon into a glass of warm water.If it is fresh the powder should foam to the top of the water.
- Take your spices our of that dinky little rack and store them in a cupboard away from heat and light, both of which impair the flavour, change the colour and shorten their life
- Storing eggs with the pointed side down keeps them fresh for a longer period.
- Do not store apples along with the rest of the fruits and vegetables. Why? Apples give out certain gases that cause fruits and vegetables to rot.
- Do not store tomatoes and cucumbers in the same draw. Why? Tomatoes give out gases that cause cucumbers to rot faster so make sure that you keep these two apart.
