Electrolysis for Hair Removal

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method by using electric current. It is more effective for giving proper shape to eyebrows, for people having very dark skin and people with light or gray hairs. Usually 13.56 MHz electric current is given to the hair follicle for hair removal. Electrologist should be certified and must have lot of experience. Number of sessions are required for complete hair removal which depend upon various factors such as area to be treated, hair growth cycles etc.

Types of Electrolysis

  • Thermolysis Electrolysis - Follicle cells are damaged by mild heat which is achieved with the help of shortwave radio frequency. In thermolysis rapid vibration of water molecule produces heat and this heat destroy hair growth cells.
  • Galvanic Electrolysis - Galvanic Electrolysis is the oldest method and show very successful results. A small amount of lye is developing in the follicle which destroys hair follicle. This lye is developing because of chemical reaction between salt and water.
  • Blend Electrolysis - Both Thermolysis and Galvanic is used in blend electrolysis for better result. If any one electrolysis process failed then other will work for removal of hair.

How Electrolysis Works?

  1. Each and every hair is separately treated depending upon its deepness, thickness and growth direction.
  2. A thin pre-sterilized and disposable wire needle is placed inside the hair follicle.
  3. By using an epilator electric current is passed to destroy the dermal papilla.
  4. Hair shaft is removed from the follicle after application of electrical current.
  5. Electrolysis permanently destroys the regenerative capability of the hair follicle hence hairs are removed for life long.

Drawbacks of Electrolysis

  • If unsterile needle us used then it may cause local infection and scarring may result if technique applied is not proper.
  • If electrolysis is done in wrong way then there are chances of skin discoloration.
  • Amount of money required for electrolysis is very high so most of people can not afford it.
  • Redness, dryness, blisters, scabs, ingrown hairs and swelling may occur sometimes as a side-effect of electrolysis.
  • It is tedious process and may give pain if it is not carried by perfect professional.
  • Result shown for large hair is not satisfactorily.
