Signs and Symptoms of Chickenpox

• General malaise, irritability and fever prior to the rash
• Small, reddish spots that fill with fluid to form blisters
• Variable outbursts of the rash, with sudden new patches
• Number of spots varies from very few to total body cover
• Itching, which may be severe
• Rash usually starts on trunk or limbs but can go to scalp
• Sometimes affects the inside of the mouth, the eyes, the genitals and the rectum
• Blisters form scabs after bursting and may remain for many days

The appearance of the blisters usually confirms the diagnosis of chickenpox and blood tests are rarely necessary. If the blisters are not scratched, the skin may be left unmarked. However, usually a few will have been so itchy that scars will remain, often for life.

If there has been much scratching, the blisters may become infected and antibiotics are sometimes needed. The whole illness usually last about two weeks from the few days before the rash to the last scabs dropping off.
