Crohn's Disease Information and Definition
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), the general name for diseases that cause inflammation in the intestines. Crohn's Disease serious condition affects about hy alf as many people as ulcerative colitis, that is, 3 per 10,000 people.
It may affect any part of the digestive tract through out its length from mouth to anus, but is usually present in the last part of the small intestine, the ileum. Affected parts become inflamed, ulcerated and thickened.
Crohn's disease Cause
Ten percent of sufferers will have a family history of the condition. It seems that some form of infection may be responsible for the disease, and both measles and a type of tuberculosis bacterium have been cited as possible causes. It tends to affect young people, especially females, and there is a possible link to the MMR vaccine.
Outlook
This is a long-term disease with periods where the disease seems to be quiet and then suddenly flares up again. To all but the most stable of people, it is a very frightening condition, as no one knows what will happen next. Depression may be present and need treating.
Crohn's disease treatment
- It is important to keep the person with crohn's disease in as good general health as possible. A balanced diet and a constant weight are desirable. Sudden flare-ups may require steroid courses of high dosage, but alternatives are available if steroids are being used too frequently. Regular blood tests to check for inflammation and infection are advisable. Drugs that prevent the growth of bacteria may be useful to keep the disease under control.
- Over time, surgery becomes a progressively important part of management to remove damaged tissue.
- As the disease can be present throughout the bowel, regular checks of the small and large intestine are necessary, usually with a colonoscope.
