Dermoid Cyst

Dermoid Cyst is an abnormal cyst that usually affects younger women and may grow to 6 inches in diameter. This cyst is similar to those present on skin tissue and can contain fat and occasionally bone, hair, and cartilage.

The majority of ovarian cysts are functional in nature and benign. Mature cystic teratomas or dermoids represent more than 10% of all ovarian neoplasms.

Dermoid cysts may occur at any age but the prime age of detection is in the childbearing years. The average age is 30. Up to 15% of women with ovarian teratomas have them in both ovaries.

Dermoid cysts can range in size from a centimeter (less than a half inch) up to 45 cm (about 17 inches) in diameter.

Hemorrhagic cysts, endometriomas, and dermoids tend to have characteristic ultrasound features that may help to differentiate them from malignant complex cysts.

My 13 year old daughter has a 2.8 cm cyst on right ovary. She also has a hx of IBS and GERD. She has been having bleeding, passing blood clots (half dollar size) and extreme pain from pelvis to just under her rib cage over over 2 weeks. She was put on a low dosage of birth control which stopped the bleeding for about 1 1/2 weeks then it started again (before finishing pills) and is having extreme pain. SHe has been back and forth to her dr who prescribed higher dosage of birth control. I want her to see a GYN but they haven't referred me. I give her tylenol, ibuprofin and even a mild oxycodine(all prescribed by her dr) nothing is helping. What else can I do? - Anne
