Information on Diverticullitis
Diverticullitis disease is thought to occur mainly beacuse of a low fibre diet, which is why it is so much more common in developed countries.
It tends to increase in frequency with age and almost a third of those over the age of 65 suffer from this disease.Without symptoms it is known as diverticular disease, with symptoms it is known as diverticulitis.
Types of Diverticullitis Disease
- Acute Diverticullitis
- Chronic Diverticullitis
Usually the only way to be sure of the diagnosis is admission to hospital for a colonoscopy, where a tube is passed into the anus and up through the bowel. The tube is filled up with fibre optic filaments that allow light to be passed into the bowel and permit the doctor to see the lining of the gut.
Another useful examination is the barium enema. Here Barium, a chemical that can be seen, is passed into the bowel via hollow tube. By twisting and turning and passing volumes of gas into the bowel as well, the lining of the bowel os clearly visible.
Any fistulas (tiny passages between parts of the bowel) may be clearly seen as the barium trickles down them.
Even more complex tests with large machinary such as the MRI scanner may occasionally be needed.
