The endometrium is the lining of the womb, or uterus. Sometimes it grows in other parts of a woman's body, especially inside the pelvic area. It can be found on the outside of the uterus, the bowel, the ovaries, the bladder, and on the membrane lining of the pelvis, where its presence is described as endometriosis. Typically this condition affects women in their early 20s and is not uncommon.

Sites of endometriosis

In endometriosis, tissue that normally lines the uterus spreads to other organs in the pelvic cavity, including the ovaries, Fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina and even the lower intestine.

This tissue undergoes the same menstrual changes as the endometrium, causing painful periods and irregular bleeding. It may lead to fertility problems.

Endometriosis Treatment

  • This depends how bad the symptoms are, and whether or not infertility is a problem. If the main problem is pain, then painkillers may be appropriate to take as and when they are needed. The contraceptive pill will help most women with endometriosis but may take up to nine months to relieve the symptoms.
  • Drugs may be prescribed to suppress the body's hormonal cycle but, depending on which ones are used, may have side-effects such as weight gain and excessive growth of facial and body hair.
  • Surgery may be necessary for the most severe cases, particularly if infertility is a problem. Sometimes this can be done by laser treatment. Interestingly, some women's endometriosis will improve or even disappear after childbirth.
