Head Louse Treatment can be very troublesome, because unless everyone who has them within a group acknowledges the fact and everyone is treated, they can be passed around again and again.

Ideally everyone in a family with one affected child and all friends should be treated.

Check hair at least once a week. Regular vigilance is the key to success. There is no shame in having head lice, but it is vital to acknowledge the condition.

If lice are found, then several methods may work: twice-daily combing with a special nit comb after conditioner has been applied; application of a special lice killer to the scalp and all the hair followed by the requisite wait and then further combing (different products require different lengths of application to ensure all lice are killed). If medication is used, it must be repeated within a week to ensure that all newly hatched nymphs are killed.

Various homeopathic treatments such as tea tree oil may be beneficial, especially if regular combing is done as well. There are some electric combs that electrocute the insects but these are not that successful and need very careful handling.

Studies have shown that having head lice over long periods of time may lead to Anaemia and can sometimes cause the child to under-perform at school.
