Measles Information
Measles viral illness is highly infectious and can vary from being very mild to being a life-threatening disorder. The virus is carried in the nose, mouth and throat and it is usually passed on via direct contact or in airborne droplets before symptoms appear.
Fact and Cause of Measles
It mostly affects children and it is preventable in most by immunisation in the form of the MMR vaccine.
Measles and Koplik spots
Measles is a highly contagious illness spread via direct contact or inhaling infected airborne droplets. Tiny white spots with a red base, known as Koplik spots, appear on the insides of the cheeks shortly before the onset of the rash on the head and the body.
The measles rash consists of separate flat red spots which merge after a few days to form blotchy, raised skin.
Treatment of measles
Usually little treatment is needed except for a few doses of children's paracetamol if there is fever or if there is pain from earache. If complications develop, such as chest infections or extreme sleepiness, dislike of bright lights or bleeding, then professional help should be sought immediately. A doctor can confirm the disease by taking blood samples or swabs from the mouth for analysis.
