Meningococcal Meningitis Symptom and Treatment

Meningococcal septicaemia can happen with meningitis or on its own. Septicaemia is generally more life threatening than meningitis and can also be caused by other germs.

However, sometimes the bacteria that cause meningitis have spread to other people who have had close or prolonged contact with a patient with meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis (also called meningococcal meningitis) or Hib.

If there is a rash it is worth trying the "glass test" as you may have seen on the television. This involves pressing a glass tumbler against the rash to see if the red spots disappear under pressure. The rash of meningococcal meningitis does not disappear on application of pressure.

Meningococcal bacteria can cause both meningitis and septicaemia (blood poisoning). Together these are known as meningococcal disease.
