Ovarian Cyst Symptom, Treatment, Pregnancy Pain, Rupture, Picture, Surgery, Type, Removal

The ovaries are reproductive organs that produce female sex cells (known. as eggs or ova). Many women develop growths or cysts on or within their ovaries. Ovarian cysts are sacs or cavities containing liquid or semi-solid matter, rather like a blister. Some cysts are completely harmless, others can be cancerous.

There are two main types of ovarian cyst:

  1. functional (non disease related) ovarian cyst and
  2. abnormal ovarian cyst

What Causes Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts may happen at any time during childbearing years. Women usually have two ovaries that become active at the time of puberty. From then on, throughout a monthly cycle, the ovaries are bombarded by hormones from the pituitary gland. During the phases of the monthly cycle, eggs develop in sacs known as follicles, which ripen until they release an egg. The majority of follicles o not mature and are reabsorbed by the body.

Sometimes the follicle persists and forms a cyst instead. These are functional cysts, caused by a slight alteration in the normal function of the ovary, usually by hormonal imbalance. Abnormal cysts result from abnormal cell growth, and it is not known why this happens.

Ovarian Cyst Treatment

  • This depends upon what sort of cyst is present. Most non-disease-related cysts clear up without treatment in a couple of months.
  • Surgery for polycystic ovary syndrome is sometimes undertaken, but because this is a hormonal disorder, hormone manipulation in the form of oral contraception may be the first and best treatment.
  • Many very large cysts require surgical removal, as do ovarian cysts that bleed or twist or cause pain. Cancerous cysts may need surgery to remove them, followed by drug treatment and sometimes radiotherapy.
