Scalp Disease

Scalp Disease usually shows itself as one or all of the following:

• Redness

• Scaling or flaking of the scalp

What causes scalp diseases?

• Psoriasis - Psoriasis tends to occur around the hair margins, often over the forehead and at the back of the neck. The area is usually demarcated by a red edge and the top will be covered with scale of varying thickness. Often there will be signs of psoriasis elsewhere, particularly over the front of the knees and back of the elbows.
• Seborrhoeic dermatitis
• Lichen planus (a type of wart)
• Fungal infections
• Dandruff

Treatment for scalp disease

By and large, the treatments for scalp conditions are steroid creams and scalp applications. There is thought to be little absorption from the scalp into the body and so extended courses may be followed.

Anti-fungal shampoos are available to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis. Removing scale with oils, such as coconut oil, and then using a coal tar shampoo may prove successful. Treatment of psoriasis is very specific, including treatments with vitamin D-derived creams and ointments and sometimes steroid creams. A coal tar shampoo may help.
