Signs and symptoms of thrush

In women the most common symptom is genital itching. There is often a thick white or creamy discharge. The area may become very swollen, sore a nd even bleed. Sexual intercourse may be painful, and there may be e xtreme pain on urination. Other symptoms include redness, itching and soreness in skin creases.

In men, when thrush attacks the penis, there may be no symptoms or the end of the penis may become red, sore and have white, scaly strips of skin which flake off. There may be a discharge, pain on urination and difficulty and soreness when the foreskin is retracted.

Women who are breast-feeding may get thrush around the nipples, making them very sore. Babies can contract oral thrush, manifested by white patches, typically around the inside of the mouth and on the tongue.
