Thrush Symptom, Treatment and Cure, Picture, Cause of thrush

Thrush is caused by a fungus called Calldida albicalls. Fungi, like mushrooms, like to grow in warm, dark, damp areas, which is why women commonly get the condition within the vagina. It also can occur in skin creases, especially under heavy breasts, in the groin, and in the crease between the bottom cheeks. Men can have the fungus on the tip of the penis.

Thrush Diagnosis and Treatment

Thrush is very common and usually easy to recognize. If there is any doubt then swabs can be sent to the laboratory where the condition can be confirmed. Treatment usually involves the use of an anti-fungal cream or pessary (to be inserted into the vagina) or capsule by mouth. Many of these are available over the counter directly from a pharmacy.

Some women have recurrent thrush and do not want to take medication all the time. Sometimes using live yogurt, especially if it is put on to a tampon and kept overnight in the vagina, may cure thrush. Taking frequent baths with vinegar in the water may also help. The condition may also get better on its own.

What is the Causes of Thrush?

The fungus is present normally on most people's skin and in the mouth and gut. When the body is healthy, Candida is kept under control by the other organisms that live around it. However, if something happens to upset the balance of the bugs the body carries then Candida may take over and grow out of control. Overgrowth of Candida may be caused by one of the following:

  • Pregnancy
  • Antibiotics
  • Tight trousers or nylon underwear
  • Cancer
  • Chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Diabetes
  • Lowered immunity and generally being unwell
  • Oral contraceptive pill
  • Having sex with someone who has thrush
  • Being very overweight with large skin creases
  • Being breast-fed by a mother who has thrush

Thrush Prevention

  • Women should wipe themselves from front to back
  • Avoid tight, synthetic underwear
  • Avoid using perfumes and strong soaps in the genital area
  • Use sanitary towels rather than tampons
  • Avoid intercourse if either you or your partner is sore
  • Use condoms, especially if you have a new partner
  • Do not take antibiotics unless you really need them

Health Tip

Immunization prevents flu infection in about two-thirds of people who are vaccinated. It can never be 100 percent effective because the virus mutates and different strains are responsible for outbreaks. Recommendations for types of vaccine are issued by the World Health Organization depending on which strains of virus are expected to be prevalent. Vaccination is advised for those in high risk groups such as the elderly or those whose immune systems are depleted.
