What are the various types of Vitiligo treatments?

LASER B CLEAR for Vitiligo

This Vitiligo treatment uses laser that combines light technology and UVB therapy. It only targets the areas affected by Vitiligo. This laser is safe and has effective results. Sessions last from 5-20 minutes, depending on the individual. It is FDA cleared and available at Private clinics in the UK and USA

XTRAC EXCIMER LASER for Vitiligo

This Vitiligo treatments uses laser that delivers UVB light and the deep penetration enables the light to reach any surviving producing cells. It is a hand-held device and only put on the affected areas. This Vitiligo treatment lasts only a few minutes and in some cases results can be seen in as little as 6 weeks. This Vitiligo treatment is painless and has no side effects. It can also work better when Tacrolimus (brand name Protopic) is applied to the affected areas. Private Clinics who offer this Vitiligo treatment normally say that an average of 4 months worth of treatment is needed to cure the skin disorder but could be more or less depending on each case. The Xtrac Excimer laser is FDA approved to cure Vitiligo.

PUVA (Psoralen and Ultraviolet A) for Vitiligo

This Vitiligo treatment uses a medicine called Psoralen which is taken orally or applied to the skin (Topically) and is taken 1-2 hours before using Ultraviolet A (UVA) light booth treatment. With this Vitiligo treatment, the skin can become sensitive and can go red 1-2 days after treatment. You must also avoid sunlight 24 hours after PUVA treatment. The process can may be long and take up to 18 months because the whole body is exposed to UVA that may increase the risk of skin cancer. This is normally done at Hospitals under a doctor's supervision.

DEPIGMENTATION THERAPY for Vitiligo

This Vitiligo treatment involves fading the rest of the skin on the body to match the already white areas. This is best for people suffering from Vitiligo on most parts of their bodies. Treatment can take up to one year.

TOPICAL STEROID THERAPY for Vitiligo

This Vitiligo treatment uses steroids to re-pigment the skin especially in the early symptoms of the skin disorder. Doctors often prescribe a mild topical corticosteroid cream for children under 10 years old and a stronger cream for adults. Patients must apply the cream to the white patches on their skin for at least 3 months before seeing any results. It is the safest and simplest treatment but may not be the most effective.

SELF-TAN PRODUCTS for Vitiligo

This is a great way to cover Vitiligo patches although you may need to re-apply every other day as self-tan does fade quickly. A make-up brush or sponge is the best way to apply the fake tan. There are so many self-tan products in the market to choose from. You may have to try a few before finding a perfect match. These products should only be applied to the white patch areas to give your body an even look.

AIRBRUSH TANNING for Vitiligo

This is sprayed on to the whole body, but may be applied to the areas affected by Vitiligo. It has great results. When first applied the tan goes on a slightly darker shade but when you shower the next day it will match your normal skin colour. The downside of this treatment is that it is quite expensive and fades quickly. At least a once a week session weekly will be needed.

CAMOUFLAGE MAKE-UP for Vitiligo

Camouflage make up is a great way to disguise Vitiligo. This is applied onto the white patches. Fixing powder is applied as well to make it waterproof and last all day.

Health Tip

Immunization prevents flu infection in about two-thirds of people who are vaccinated. It can never be 100 percent effective because the virus mutates and different strains are responsible for outbreaks. Recommendations for types of vaccine are issued by the World Health Organization depending on which strains of virus are expected to be prevalent. Vaccination is advised for those in high risk groups such as the elderly or those whose immune systems are depleted.
