Avoiding pregnancy or preventing pregnancy

Methods that work and myths

The best method to avoid pregnancy is avoiding sex altogether. Some couples use withdrawal methods that may reduce the chance of pregnancy but only to a small degree, as small amounts of sperm are released during the intercourse even before ejaculation. There is still a high chance of becoming pregnant in this way because the sperm before ejaculation is quite strong. The highest likelihood of becoming pregnant is during the first two weeks after the first day of your menstruation. Sometimes having sex only during the time when ovulation is absent fails to pre-vent pregnancy. Your egg can be released earlier or wait longer to be fertilized, while the sperm may remain longer inside your fallopian tube to ensure that the egg is fertilized. Having an inter-course during your period can also lead to pregnancy if it occurs toward its end. As the sperm can survive for up to three days, fertilization may occur later. It is sufficient to use contraceptives during your ovulation that lasts only up to 24 hours that m
arks the length of your egg’s life.

Contraception is the only safe way to prevent pregnancy

Contraceptive pills are the best way to avoid pregnancy. Such pills can be selected appropriately to your individual requirements that are influenced by your hormones. Remember also about us-ing condoms. It is important to learn how to have sex using condoms if pregnancy is unwanted. If pregnancy occurs despite precautions a doctor can prescribe a contraceptive pill that needs to be taken within 72 hours. Such pill does not induce miscarriage but affects hormones.

Know your menstrual cycle to time possible pregnancies

Understanding the process of menstrual cycle and pregnancy is helpful when trying to avoid get-ting pregnant that depends only on your ovulation. To become pregnant an egg is released that needs to be inseminated by the sperm. This process determines your pregnancy. Your menstrual cycle is divided into two periods, prior to ovulation and after the ovulation. During the period before ovulation estrogens dominate while in the second period progesterone hormones are in charge.

Calculating when to have sex

Sexual intercourse needs to occur before the ovulation, but pregnancy also happens during or just after ovulation. It all depends how quickly sperm reaches the fallopian tube. Sperm travels there six to eight hours while an egg can be fertilized throughout 12 to 24 hours. As sperm can live only for three to five days, there are only a few days, usually between five to seven days, when a baby can be conceived. There are twenty days when your intercourse doesn’t lead to pregnancy out of around ten when it does. Avoiding sex during these ten days should prevent any preg-nancy.

Ensure that contraceptives work

Most common contraceptives such as condoms need to be used properly to work. They need to fit with a space left at the top for sperm. Sometimes condoms may break. This event needs to be noticed immediately, and a condom has to be replaced. Certain gels that kill sperm can also be used along with preservatives.
