Losing Balance - When person Looses Balance?

Question
I am 53 years old. I first had an episode of Vertigo in 1996. Checked up with an ENT, and it was diagnosed as Meniere's Disease.
I was OK till 1998, then again an attack occurred in 2003 and recently in 2005.
My symptom are lightheadedness, as if everything's moving, and nausea. I feel it's associated with the Tinnitus in my left ear, due to which I suffer from hearing. I was given Vertin-8 mg and subsequently (after 1 month) told to discontinue when the vertigo eased. The ENT specialist in Asia is of the view that “there is no cure for it.”

Do you have any other opinion?

Answer
From your description it appears that you are suffering from the middle stage (i.e well established) Meniere's disease.

Yes, I agree there is no “cure”. However the condition adequately so that you may function normally. Since it is associated with High Blood Pressure your first step should be to bring these figures down. Try the following lifestyle measures.

•  Avoid cheese, ketchups, tinned foods and such, that have a lot of salt/ Sodium. Have a nutritionist formulate a low-sodium diet.

•  Go easy on chocolate, which contains theobromine, a compound that is somewhat similer to caffeine and is known to trigger vertebrobasilar migraine which may aggravate vertigo.

•  Find ways to deal with stress. Meditation, yoga, Tai chi are all effective in reducing hypertension.

•  Exercise regularly.

•  If you are overweight, losing even a few kilos can help alleviate your misery. Weight gain puts the squeeze on the end arteries that supply blood to the ears and the brain.

•  Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption.

•  Other medical problems like diabetes, thyroid disorders, etc. should also be investigated and treated simultaneously.

Finally, cinnarazine (25 mg ) taken at night for 3 months continuously, and potassium sparing diuretics used for tackling high BP have been found to be effective in treating Meniere's disease.
