Secondary Raynaud's Phenomenon

Raynaud's phenomenon is a condition in which episodic attacks occur because blocking or narrowing of blood vessels because of cold temperature and stress. It mainly affects fingers, toes and other extremities body areas. Raynaud's phenomenon is associated with other disease hence it is also referred as secondary Raynaud's phenomenon. Regular blood circulation does not occur because blood vessels are contracted. Raynaud's phenomenon is more common in female having age between 15 to 20 years. Discoloration at affected area is occurring and colors involved in it are white, blue and red.

Conditions Associated with Raynaud's Phenomenon

Following are the underlying diseases which are basically responsible for Raynaud's phenomenon. When these diseases are cured then Raynaud's phenomenon automatically vanishes.

  • Rheumatic diseases
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Trauma
  • Medicines which constrict vessels
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Pulmonary hypertension

Symptoms of Raynaud's Phenomenon

When blood supply become less then fingers first becomes white and when oxygen level reduces to remarkable extent then it turn to blue color and when situation is recovering then color change to red. Affected area becomes numb, swelling and pricking also occurs sometimes during recovery process.

Treatment for Raynaud's Phenomenon

In the treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon underlying cause is first treated. Following are treatments for Raynaud's phenomenon.

  1. Medicines like vasodilators, nifedipine or diltiazem which helps in widening of blood vessels are prescribe by doctor to cure Raynaud's phenomenon.
  2. Biofeedback is also most of the time applied to control involuntary body functions.
  3. Sympathectomy surgery is also one option to treat Raynaud's phenomenon but it is used very rarely.
  4. If above mentioned treatment fails then balloon angioplasty or laser surgery is tried to cure diseases.

Prevention for Raynaud's Phenomenon

  • Avoid smoking and drinking as it responsible for narrowing of blood vessels.
  • Wear socks, gloves, scarf and other warm material to avoid Raynaud's phenomenon.
  • Do not visit to cold environmental places and keep away yourself from stressful situation.
  • Place affected area in warm water during Raynaud's attack.
