Raynaud's and Scleroderma

Only 5-10% Patient having Raynaud's disease suffered from scleroderma but person who is having scleroderma there are 95% of chances for having Raynaud's disease. Raynaud's phenomenon is considered as the first indication of the scleroderma. Person having scleroderma in first ten years show symptoms of Raynaud's phenomenon and cutaneous fibrosis. After ten years along with Raynaud's phenomenon thickening of skin, pulmonary hypertension starts.

What is Raynaud's Phenomenon?

Raynaud's phenomenon is a condition in which discoloration occurs at body extremities because of cold temperature and stress. Blood flow decreases at affected area so White, blue, red color patterns are seen in affected area. Sometime it occurs along with other diseases such as scleroderma. Females are largely affected as compared to male. Raynaud's phenomenon mainly affects fingers and toes but it also affects nose, ear, lip. Various options are available for to cure Raynaud's phenomenon.

What is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma also known as systemic sclerosis and featured by hardening of the skin due to excessive amount of collagen. Microvascular, immunological changes and active inflammation may also occur in scleroderma. Scleroderma may be divided as either localized or systemic. In localized only surrounding tissue is involved while systemic scleroderma affect lungs, kidneys and heart. Scleroderma involves abnormal growth of connective tissue. Women are at greater risk than men for having scleroderma.

Treatment for Raynaud's and Scleroderma

  • Drugs like vasodilators, nifedipine or diltiazemthat which increases blood flow is given to treat Raynaud's phenomenon. Surgical operation is also sometimes done.
  • In scleroderma treatment first it is limited to treatment of Raynaud's phenomenon and any oesophageal problem.
  • Patient with diffuse cutaneous form of scleroderma is treated with immunosuppressive drugs.
