How to Treat Raynaude’s Disease

Raynaude’s disease is a disorder in which blood flow becomes less at fingers or toes during stress or in cold weather. Raynaude’s disease and secondary Raynaude’s phenomenon is not curable. With the help of various treatments you may reduce chances of occurrence. Medicines and other treatments are commonly used but surgery is required in rare cases.

Medicinal Treatment for Raynaude’s Disease

  • Doctors prescribe some medicines which help in widening of blood vessels and ultimately improve blood flow.
  • Medicines like calcium channel blockers (nifedipine), alpha blockers such as prazosin or vasodilators are generally preferred by doctors.
  • Many times these medicines give side effect so it is taken under doctor’s supervision.

Surgery Treatment for Raynaude’s Disease

  1. Sympathectomy - Operation that is done for cutting of nerve cells from finger or toe is called as sympathectomy. Through small opening doctor removes nerve cells from affected area. Sympathectomy surgery is required in very rare cases of Raynaude’s disease.
  2. Revascularization - By using other blood vessels or synthetic material blocked arteries are bypassed in the revascularization operation.
  3. Endartectomy - In this surgery atherosclerotic deposits are detached by opening the diseased artery.
  4. Laser ablation - This operation removes fatty deposit later by layer. It is very fast and has more benefits than other operation.

Other Treatments for Raynaude’s Disease

  • Biofeedback - Biofeedback is useful for getting control over involuntary action such as skin temperature.
  • Balloon angioplasty - In balloon angioplasty catheter with a balloon tip is placed into an artery. Individual with tiny section of blockage is benefited mostly with balloon angioplasty.
  • Exercise - Patient having primary Raynaude’s disease excercises daily then circulation of blood flow may increase.

Prevention to Reduce Chances of Raynaude’s Disease

When Raynaude’s disease is developing you can not stop it but you can prevent further occurrence of Raynaude’s attacks by following preventable measures.

  • Always wear gloves, socks and scarf for keeping fingers, toes and ear warm during cold days or when you are going to cold places.
  • Stay away from stressful situation which increases chances of Raynaude’s disease.
  • Avoid smoking because blood vessels become narrow because of smoking.
  • Avoid use of vibrating tools.
